If you do have to replace it bear in mind !

A 500 Gph pump 3/4 " ID hose is like spitting on a house fire !

Get your self a 1100 Gph 1 1/8 " ID hose ! you may need a bigger hose and outlet but at least you'll have some capacity !

I read on another board where someone recommended one of these:

Just over $100 for an 800gph setup is not that bad considering it comes with the pump & seperate float switch. Water comes in through the 3 inlets, into the big round strainer inside the box.

Regarding using a foam filter - I have an 1100gph unit that's oblong - anyone know where I could find some foam (open cell I guess) to put around the bottom of the pump like those keepalive filters? I've also thought if I could get a big block of foam - I could cut it to tightly fit the bilge and cut it out to cover the pump entirely. This would prevent any leaves (my big problem) from getting anywhere near the pump - they'd just lay on top of the foam and make it easy to scoop them up.

Cfishn - I agree. I got the 1100 last year and used an adapter for my existing through-hull. This year I will put in a new through-hull so take advantage of the bigger diameter. Old hose also had a 90 degree elbow to go out the transom - another bottleneck. I'll put the new one through the side so I can eliminate the turns.

Maybe try some screen molded into a coffee can shape and just sit it around the pump ?

Or lay a sheet of screen over the pump in the bilge area just cut it out about the size of the bilge and just let it sit on top of the pump , it will not catch all but most !

If you add some supports it would sit level...

HERE is a excellent story that covers Bilge pump Capacity in depth ....
